Our Journey

We walked for thirteen days from north to south. We crossed one full degree of Latitude, walking about 200km through the bush. No path. We walked up and down sand dunes and around claypans and salt lakes. We walked through beautiful mulga scrub some reminiscent of Japanese gardens gone wild, with beautiful old growth trees and spinifex. We also boiled a billy underneath Coolibah trees with nardoo growing around them on ground imprinted deeply with camel footprints. We rediscovered waterholes teaming with little finches, and pondered tracks and scats in the red-orange desert sand.

We camped in some beautiful spots, each one unique and appealing. One night we lounged by our waterfront property at the edge of a claypan and watched the sunset over the water. Another evening we sat on top of a sand dune and enjoyed our million dollar views of the distant salt lake. Some nights we camped under desert oak trees and others we were protected by a screen of spinifex grass somewhat like a razor wire fence. Every night we lay in our swags and marvelled at the sky filled to absolute capacity with stars. Tom and I tried to spot shooting stars as our eyes slowly closed and we fell asleep exhausted and aching.
